Former Ethics and Integrity Minister Miriam Matembe has described as nonsense a move by parliament to offer medals to former legislators.

This comes as the Speaker of Parliament in conjunction with the Presidential Awards Committee organise a Golden Jubilee Awards Ceremony for Members of Parliament who have served in the different legislatures from the time of Uganda’s independence.

Ms Matembe who also served as Mbarara municipality woman MP says while she is not against recognising people for serving the country in a distinguished way, using medals to politicise the matter is unacceptable.

“This is nonsense, bluffing, I don’t want it, it doesn’t make any meaning to me”, said Matembe.

She argues that she has been recognised by Ugandans for work done and has been awarded several medals internationally and so doesn’t need this Golden Jubilee medal.

Here she boasts that in 1999 she was declared one of the 100 heroines world over.

“Here I am, I worked for this country for 27 years I have no retirement package, I have nothing, I have been robbed, now you call my name and you are giving me a medal!” She exclaimed before adding that “let them give me my retirement package.”

Other members on the list of current and former legislators to be awarded the golden Jubilee medal later this month are Dr Kizza Besigye and Winnie Byanyima.

Ms Byanyima, is the former Mbarara Municipality MP while Dr Besigye was both a member of the National Resistance Council (NRC) and the Constituent Assembly(CA) which preceded the current House.

The awards are to be presented on 26th September in Kampala are in recognition of their service to the nation.
