House Of Rep Member Arrested For Forging His Academic Certificate (PICS)

The trial of Honourable Nse Bassey Ekpenyong, a serving member of the House of Representatives, representing Oron Federal Constituency of Akwa- Ibom State in the National Assembly who allegedly forged his academic certificate commenced today, April 26, 2017 at the Federal High Court, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The accused is facing a nine-count charge bordering on Forgery, Uttering of documents beforeJustice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court sitting in Uyo, Akwa ibom.

At today’s court sitting, the EFCC presented the first prosecution witness, Eng. Garba A. Umar, National Secretary of the Buhari Youth Organisation, BYO. Umar who was led in evidence by the prosecution counsel, Ahmedu I. Arogha, told the court that the national body of BYO organization sometime in 2016 received complaint from the Akwa Ibom State Chapter of BYO stating that they have discovered a case of certificate forgery against the defendant, which prompted the organization to file and submit a petition against the defendant.

He further told the court that the defendant forged his Ordinary National Diploma in Business Administration result, falsified his age and his St. Vincent Secondary School Certificate (WAEC) which were the documents he used to contest election in 2015. All the documents were tendered by the prosecution and marked as exhibit by the court.

The second prosecution witness, Dr. Mrs. Consence Evuline, the Registrar of Abia State Polytechnic, informed the court that on 2nd June, 2016 she received a letter from EFCC which sought to confirm if the defendant was a student of the Polytechnic and if the certificate and the statement of result emanated from them. She told the court that the defendant was not and never their student at any time and the certificate paraded by the defendant did not emanate from them.

The case has been adjourned to May 3,4 2017 for continuation of trial.

Nse Bassey Ekpenyong is alleged to have forged an Abia State Polytechnic Ordinary National Diploma Certificate and uttered a 1999 West African Examination School Certificate, WASSCE, and thereby committed perjury before an Electoral Tribunal where he claimed that the certificates are genuine.
