The suspects

After 11 months on the run, two notorious kidnappers, said to be wanted criminals in Benin, the Edo State capital, have been finally arrested by the Edo State Police Command.

The suspects, identified as Best Iyoha and Junior Ekete, who were members of a kidnap gang that had terrorised parts of Edo and Delta states, were arrested by the operatives of the anti-kidnapping squad

They were reported to have kidnapped a 40-year-old businessman, one Okpogie Osaigbovo, while he was supervising construction workers around Country Home Motel road in Benin.

It was gathered that the two suspects had stormed the project site at about 11am in a red Toyota Camry car, marked Lagos BDG-742-CL, and whisked him away at gun point.

They were said to have contacted the victim’s family and demanded a ransom of N200m and were later paid N8 million by the family before the man was released.

The suspects, it was gathered, ran out of luck when police operatives trailed them to their hideout, where they were subsequently arrested.

Items such as the Camry car used in the operation, two cut-to-size guns, two laptops and four live cartridges were recovered from them.

Also recovered were two Samsung mobile phones suspected to be the property of their victims.

Commenting on their arrest, the Commissioner of Police, Haliru Gwandu, warned that the command would not tolerate any group of persons who engaged in criminal activities in the state.

Gwandu also urged members of the public to continue to support the police with useful information.
